On January 9th, Wizards surprised us with the announcement (covered in NY times) of a 5th edition of D&D in the works.
On January 28th and 29th, Wizards hosted their first playtest for DnD Next in Fort Wayne, IN. I was so upset that I heard about it after the fact... I mean Indiana is next door. The problem? The playtest is protected by NDA.
You can read the official Wizards summary of the event here. Hopefully this article will save you lot of time and cut straight to what is known and what is not known at this point.
Wizards assembled a dream team of D&D designers. Their design goal is to create a quintessential D&D (no pun intended), capturing the feel of all editions. The hope is that players who were alienated by radical design choices in 4th edition will return. Wizards is setting out on a great experiment to involve the community in the design of the game over the next year. The D&D Experience late January was the first such event.
Using the D&D Next group on the Wizard's site, you can participate in the feedback. There are blog posts about mechanics, seeking player input. And, of course, a whole forum for what have so far been extremely civilized and intelligent discussions. Here, your game design suggestions will become the property of Wizards.
So I have been mulling over the forums and various websites, trying to glean fact from fiction. Since I spend pretty much a whole day reading, I thought I might share.

The mysteries and wonders of the Dragon Empires are finally revealed! The continent of Tian Xia stretches from the polar ice in the north to well south of the equator—a realm where honorable saumrai, devious ninja, martial artistry, strange spirits, and imperial dragons rule. This broad overview of Tian Xia presents details on more than two dozen regions inspired by the mythology of Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, and other Asian touchstones, as well as brand new realms like Wanshou (a swamp nation of slaves ruled by a kraken), the hobgoblin nation of Kaoling, the tengu homeland of Kwanlai, the monster-infested Valashmai Jungle, and the underwater locathah enclave of Xidao. The Dragon Empires Gazetteer also presents five new player character races—the birdlike tengus, reptilian nagaji, shape changing fox like kitsune, reincarnated spiritualists known as samsarans, and the shadowy masters of trickery called the wayang. An overview of life in the Dragon Empires offers a look at a new core pantheon (including more than a dozen brand-new deities), several new factions, and the challenges faced by a land recovering from the recent fall of a continental empire. Grab your katana, ready your best kung fu, and prepare to discover a whole new world of exciting adventure!

Each challenge is a mega-encounter that plays in just a few hours, but many will need to make more than one run at it in pursuit of victory.
Each D&D Lair Assault challenge will specify a level. The second D&D Lair Assault, Talon of Umberlee, is 8th level. Players bring characters of the challenge’s level to your scheduled event to participate. Characters higher or lower level than the challenge’s level are not allowed.
We use straightforward rules to equip characters for their deadly battles. Each character receives one magic item of one level higher than their level (level + 1), one of their level (level + 0), and one of one level lower than their level (level – 1). In addition, characters receive gold pieces equal to the value of one magic item of one level lower than their level (level – 1) to buy other equipment they think they’ll need. Each character may have no more than two consumable items (like potions or magic ammunition) equal to or less than the challenge’s level, and no more than one rare magic item. Note that players may equip their characters with magic items that are less than the stated levels if they so choose.
So, to use our 8th level example above, each character would have one 9th level, one 8th level and one 7th level magic item, plus 2,600 gold pieces to spend on other equipment (both mundane and magical).
